Desk Posture, Back Pain & “T-Rex Arms” … Advice From Dr Florence (chiro in Ocean Grove)

If you’ve got a desk job and your back, neck, or shoulders are constantly tight… this is for you.

A huge number of people I see for chiropractic care in Ocean Grove have pain that isn’t from one big injury, it’s from hours of sitting with poor desk posture. Over time, that adds up to back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, and that heavy, tight feeling across the shoulders.

Enter: T-rex posture 🦖

What is T-rex posture?

It’s the simple setup I talk about in my video:

✔️ Sit up tall (not slouched)
✔️ Elbows tucked in by your sides
✔️ Shoulders gently back and down
✔️ Screen at eye level

Think “tiny T-rex arms” instead of reaching forward like a turtle.

This position helps reduce strain on your neck, mid-back, and shoulders, areas that get overloaded with desk work.

Why desk posture causes back and neck pain

When you sit slouched for hours:

Your head drifts forward
This loads the neck and upper back muscles, often leading to neck pain, headaches, and shoulder tension.

Your mid-back stiffens
The thoracic spine stops moving well, which can contribute to upper and lower back pain. This is something I commonly address with chiropractic adjustments.

Your lower back loses support
Slouching switches off key support muscles, making the lower back work harder. Over time, this can turn into ongoing lower back pain.

Your muscles get tight and irritated
This is where massage therapy, soft tissue work, and sometimes cupping therapy can help reduce tension and improve circulation.

How I help desk workers at Flora Chiropractic

If desk posture has been creeping up on you, care usually includes a mix of:

✔️ Chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal mobility
✔️ Massage and soft tissue therapy for tight neck, shoulder, and back muscles
✔️ Cupping therapy where suitable for muscle recovery
✔️ Exercise rehabilitation (physiotherapy-style) to strengthen postural muscles
✔️ Practical desk setup and posture advice, like T-rex posture

The goal is to not just ease pain, but help your body handle desk life better long term.
