Migraines: More Than “Just a Headache” 🤕✨

Many people use the terms migraine and headache interchangeably, but they are actually very different conditions. Migraines are a complex neurological condition that can significantly impact daily life, work, sleep and overall wellbeing.

At my chiropractic clinic in Ocean Grove, I regularly see people who have struggled with migraines for years before realising that their posture, neck tension and nervous system stress may be contributing factors.

Understanding migraines is the first step toward managing them more effectively.

What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is a neurological event that often involves moderate to severe head pain along with other symptoms affecting the nervous system.

Unlike a standard headache, migraines commonly involve:

• Throbbing or pulsing pain
• Sensitivity to light and sound
• Nausea or vomiting
• Visual disturbances or “aura”
• Fatigue and brain fog
• Neck stiffness or tension

Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.

For some people they occur occasionally, while others experience them frequently.

How Migraines Differ From Headaches

A headache is generally considered a symptom. Migraines are considered a neurological condition.

Tension headaches are often caused by muscle tightness, stress or fatigue and usually create a dull ache around the head.

Migraines involve changes in nerve signalling, blood vessel activity and sensory processing within the brain and nervous system.

Interestingly, many migraine sufferers also experience neck pain before or during an episode. Research suggests the upper cervical spine and trigeminal nerve pathways are closely connected.

This is one reason why the neck can play a role in migraine patterns.

Common Migraine Triggers

Triggers vary from person to person but may include:

Stress 😓
Poor sleep
Hormonal changes
Certain foods
Dehydration
Bright lights
Postural strain
Neck tension

Many people living busy lifestyles on the Bellarine Peninsula spend long hours sitting, driving or working at computers, which can increase neck stress and nervous system overload.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic care does not “cure” migraines, but it may help reduce contributing musculoskeletal and nervous system stressors.

Treatment may focus on:

Improving cervical spine movement
Reducing muscle tension
Supporting posture
Encouraging nervous system regulation
Improving mobility and movement patterns

Research has shown some migraine sufferers experience improvements in migraine frequency, intensity or duration with manual therapy and lifestyle modifications.

The Bigger Picture

Migraines are often multifactorial. Long term management usually requires a holistic approach including:

Stress management
Sleep quality
Hydration
Movement
Nutritional awareness
Postural support

The goal is not just symptom relief but improving the overall resilience of the nervous system.

Your body functions best when stress is reduced and movement is restored 🌿
