Why Imaging Is Helpful Sometimes… But Often Does Not Change the Outcome 📸🧠
Modern imaging is incredible. MRI and CT scans can provide detailed insight into the spine and surrounding tissues. In some situations imaging is extremely important and medically necessary.
However, many people are surprised to learn that imaging findings often do not directly correlate with pain.
At my chiropractic clinic in Ocean Grove, one of the most common conversations I have with patients is helping them understand why a scan may not always tell the full story.
Pain Is More Complex Than a Scan
Many people assume that if pain exists, there must always be visible “damage” on imaging.
Interestingly, research consistently shows this is not always the case.
One of the most well known studies published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology found that large percentages of asymptomatic people, meaning people with no pain at all, had disc bulges, disc degeneration and even disc herniations on MRI scans.
In fact, disc degeneration was present in many adults even from relatively young ages.
This means structural changes on imaging are often a normal part of aging rather than a direct cause of pain.
Why This Matters
Imaging can sometimes create unnecessary fear.
People may believe they are “damaged” or fragile when in reality the body is highly adaptable and resilient.
Research suggests fear surrounding movement and pain can actually worsen outcomes and delay recovery.
When Imaging Is Important
Imaging absolutely has a place.
It is important when we suspect:
Fractures
Tumours
Infections
Severe neurological compromise
Significant trauma
However, for many common cases of back or neck pain, conservative care is often recommended first.
Movement Often Matters More
The body responds incredibly well to movement, strengthening and gradual rehabilitation.
Pain is influenced by many factors including:
Stress
Sleep
Movement quality
Inflammation
Nervous system sensitivity
This is why two people with identical scans may have completely different symptoms.
Chiropractic and Functional Care
Rather than focusing solely on imaging findings, chiropractic care often looks at:
How the body moves
Muscle function
Joint mobility
Posture
Lifestyle stressors
The goal is helping the body function better overall, not simply “fixing” a picture on a scan.
Your scan does not define your future 😊
